Call For Pause in Artificial Intelligence Experiments

‘’We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems.’’ open letter

We all know that with the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI has led to the race of AI systems with big tech giants joining the marathon. After ChatGPT launch, Google announced to launch its own Chatbot Brad, whereas companies like Microsoft did collaborate with OpenAI to bring AI systems into it’s famous product Microsoft Office. Also, many companies are approaching OpenAI for collaboration as well as other companies launching their own AI systems.

Elon Musk, one of the tech billionaires besides being among the initiators of OpenAI, has signed a letter with other tech companies to pause AI experiements. According to Musk, AI systems with human-competitive intelligence pose profound risks to society and humanity, and powerful AI systems should be developed only once their effects are positive and their risks manageable.

The letter emphasizes the need for transparency in AI research and development, as well as measures to ensure reliable control and the prioritization of ethical principles that prioritize safety and humanity's welfare.

Prominent AI academics and CEOs, including Stuart Russell, Yoshua Bengio, Gary Marcus, and Emad Mostaque, have signed the petition, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, legislator Andrew Yang, and author Yuval Noah Harari. The letter calls for government action to regulate AI companies to secure the future.

The letter was published online by non-profit Future of life Institute on March 22, 2023.
